The St Vincent de Paul Society (or as it’s often –the SVP) is an international Christian voluntary organisation dedicated to tackling poverty and disadvantage by providing practical assistance to those in need- irrespective of ideology, faith, age or gender. The Society is a lay organisation initially formed in Paris in 1833 by Blessed Frédéric Ozanam and his companions and active in England and Wales since 1844. Placed under the Patronage of St Vincent de Paul, it is inspired by his thinking and works. It seeks, in the spirit of justice and charity, to help those who are suffering poverty in whatever form. Twinnage
We are twinned with a conference in South Sudan. The country is poor and has been ravaged by a civil war for over two years. We provide financial support to the conference each year so that they can help poor families in their area.
Kerala project
We have recently signed up to a local project in Kerala, run by a local, sister conference. They support poor families in a local village who survive on day labour. To aid the families build up a more sustainable income we have funded the purchase of 6 buffalo. This will directly benefit 24 members of 6 families and indirectly 72 others. The buffalo will provide milk to improve the families diet, but also a surplus which can then be sold to a local dairy, or made into butter.
Emergency accommodation
Recently the conference has supported a local person who was provided with emergency accommodation as they were homeless. Unfortunately all they received was an empty property. We were able to buy them a bed, cooker and fridge freezer, as well as provide them with pans, crockery, etc donated by the parish.
We have also built a relationship with a local homeless accommodation centre and have provided some coats donated by the parish and also purchased some toiletry packs.
For winter we purchased 25 cold weather packs for the homeless of Rhyl.
We also regularly visit individuals locally as part of our befriending service and are building a relationship with local nursing homes to visit those who would benefit from additional company.
We meet every other Tuesday at 7pm in the Parish Library. If you would like to join the SVP, support our work, or know of someone who may benefit from a visit please call 07555 328 062
